An interpretation of a life lived and the joys, challenges and reflections that we all experience.
Duncan’s vision for ‘Stages of Life’ is to encourage and offer hope to everyone who wants to explore a new direction in their life and to enable in others the possibility of awakening their creativity to change direction, or at the least, gain pleasure and joy from allowing credence to their inner creativeness.
Without creativity, be it music, art, the written or spoken word or similar, the world would be a poorer place and bereft of joy and happiness. Duncan believes that the arts are a huge contributor to mental health and hope for the future.

STAGES OF LIFE
-
i. BEGINNINGS
Beginnings is essentially about birth and light out of darkness. It is also a metaphor for rebirth and allowing yourself to change to live the way you want to live. To quote the great Charles Bukowski, “Can you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be?” It is about allowing yourself to see the person you want to see and setting them free. It is a call to arms; “Be Happy”

ii. DISCOVERY
Discovery, is about the journey through life and what we learn along the way. The nature of being is difficult and enthused with suffering – that is the human condition. The track seeks to diffuse some of that by focussing on positive ways to deal with life. In seeking to acknowledge that every life is different, at the end of the day, we all share a common humanity and are not so very different despite what we might perceive as being different on the surface.

iii. ASPIRATION
Aspiration, is inspired by hope and the desire to give your dreams full reign. It is about allowing yourself to dispel negativity and work towards self-fulfilment by jettisoning those negative emotions and events which seek to hold you back. Finally, in offering a vista of hope, it seeks to promote joy with a warning that once you’ve achieved whatever you define as success, you don’t let it go to your head and thus retain your humanity and decency.

iv. REFLECTION
Reflection, covers both the time in life when you feel yourself reflecting on all of those life experiences that have gone before or the myriad moments you cogitate on events that happen to you. Again, it is the human condition to worry and try to make sense of life’s joys and perceived injustices. Depending on someone’s level of sensitivity, the normal course of life necessitates making sense of it all. The music had to reflect the sensitivity of emotion but conversely to be dramatic to acknowledge that reflection also encompasses fear, anger and falling short.

v. ACCEPTANCE
Acceptance, is perhaps the most important movement of the album. It represents acknowledgement and, finally, acceptance of all that has gone before. It offers hope and inner peace by the message that we can’t be perfect, and our interpretation of our shortcomings might not be the way others see us. Those people or events that seek to diminish us or reduce us are consigned to irrelevancy. Even when we feel we have not measured up to our own vision of ourselves, we can still rise above that by smiling a lot – because of our smile we make life more beautiful!

vi. RELEASE
Release, is a joyous acknowledgement that life has been lived and accepting that it is now over. The first section is a soaring melodious rock moment which represents love in life and the fact it endures when we are gone. The second folk part is the nether land between life and death. It was inspired by a young girl who looked like a little pixie dancing at a festival – all beads and twirling hands. The finale, rock out section, was the departure from life and entry into whatever lies beyond, hence the dramatic nature of the music.
